5 Google Docs Resume Templates Available on Google Drive

You can access the Template Gallery from Google Docs or Google Drive. Remember to have English as your default language, or else the below templates won’t show. Here are some of my favorites::

1. Swiss

swiss google docs resume template

The Swiss template uses a one-column layout and puts skills in the center of it, which resembles a functional resume format. If you’re leaning towards the most common, reverse-chronological format, you can have a resume summary or career objective at the top and move the skills toward the end.

2. Modern Writer

modern writer google docs resume template

The Modern Writer template seems like a great idea for creative resumes. The typography is distinctive enough to make it stick. Plus, there’s an awards section to display all your accomplishments. If you don’t like the font or choice of secondary colors, feel free to change the looks of your resume to make it more you.

3. Serif

serif google docs resume template

The Serif template is the first and only one of the built-in Google Docs resume templates that have a two-column layout. It’s useful if you’re an experienced candidate because it can hold quite a lot of info. As there’s more room, there are also new sections you can use, for instance, languages or projects. You don’t always have to go with the resume sections you have on the template. Adjust them to your needs.

4. Spearmint

The Spearmint template is quite similar to the Modern Writer. It has the same section order, but the typography is less busy. If you liked the Modern Writer but prefer to be on the safe side, this is your template.

5. Coral

The Coral template is the last free template in the resumes category on Google Drive. The name is based on the color used for the headings, making this template the most modern choice.

Expert hint: The above resume templates have their cover letter equivalents. So, to make your application consistent, have a look at the cover letter templates available on GDrive.

Tips for Making the Most of Free Google Docs Resume Templates

Now I'll show you how to leverage the best features of Google Docs and make your resume template even better:

See the Version History

You don’t have to worry about losing progress or reverting to the old versions of your document. Your inputs are saved in the cloud, and you can access the version history from the document’s upper right corner.

Collaborate

Share your resume with your friends and family to review your application and get constructive feedback. All you need to do is send them a link or use their email addresses to share access. Trust me, it helps a lot to have a bonus pair of eyes on your resume.

Download in Multiple Formats

Not only can you upload various formats, but you can also download your Google Docs resume in the format your hiring manager expects.

Save Countless Copies

Something I can't state enough is that it’s necessary to write a single resume for every job you’re after. Such a resume is called a targeted resume, and it skyrockets your chances of landing the job. Google Docs enables you to make unlimited copies of the document, so tweak away.

Check Spelling and Grammar

Google Docs has a built-in spellchecker. You can also download plenty of add-ons to be on the safe side. Just go to Extensions->Add-ons->Get add-ons.

Work Offline

Enable offline access to your document and work on it whenever and wherever you want. The changes will automatically sync once you’re back online.

Use Formatting

Google Docs offers plenty of safe formatting options. Use them to prettify your document without an ATS scanning failure.

Upload Outside Templates

Even if you liked the templates I showed above, maybe there’s the one outside Google Docs that you liked most. Google Docs supports standard OpenDocument, Rich text, plain Unicode text, zipped HTML, and Microsoft Word formats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google Docs good for resumes?

Yes, Google Docs is a great tool for making a resume. It's powerful enough to create professional resume layouts, provided that you know how to use its functions. If you'd prefer to see resume tips and sample chunks of text as you're writing, consider a dedicated resume builder instead.

How to format a resume in Google Docs?

  • Set the resume margins to 1 inch on all sides of the document.
  • Pick legible resume fonts such as Calibri and Times New Roman, and set the font size to 12–14 for headings and 10–12 for paragraphs.
  • Make a resume header at the top with your contact information.
  • Use standard resume sections.
  • Separate the sections with white space or horizontal and vertical lines.

Are Google Docs resume templates ATS-friendly?

Yes, Google Docs resume templates can be successfully scanned by the Applicant Tracking Systems if you follow these best practices for an ATS-friendly resume:

  • Avoid pictures, illustrations, and tables, as they can confuse the ATS.
  • Use classic resume fonts not to make it too complex for the system to read.
  • Stick to the reverse-chronological format unless you have a good reason to opt for alternatives.
  • Don't give your resume sections unusual titles because ATSs look for standard headings.
  • Save your resume as a PDF or DOCX file, depending on what your recruiter asked for.

How do you email a resume made in Google Docs?

The best way to email your resume is to save it as a PDF and send it as an attachment. While it may be tempting to email the link to your resume instead of attaching it, it's not a commonly accepted best practice.
