Here’s how to write a fashion resume that’s du jour:

1. Start With the Best Fashion Resume Format

Here’s the deal:

An unprofessional resume format is simply démodé.

That’s why your resume layout should be readable and neat… with all buttons in place and a nice collar.

Follow these tips:

Fashion Resume Format

  • Use the reverse chronological order in the job summary and education sections to highlight your most recent experiences.
  • Outline your document using these resume sections: Heading, Summary / Objective, Experience, Education, Skills and Extras.
  • Set 1-inch resume margins on all sides.
  • Choose a clean resume font like 11-14pt Arial or Helvetica. Stick to it throughout your resume.
  • Your resume length should be 1-2 pages depending on your experience level.
  • Make your resume ATS-friendly by using a simple resume template.
  • Add your contact information in the resume header. Include your name and surname, telephone number, email address, and LI profile URL.

Expert hint: Save your resume as a PDF file. Fashion resumes saved as a .docx file may not be readable on certain computers.

2. Write a Good Fashion Resume Summary or Objective

A compelling introduction statement is like the little black dress of every woman’s closet.

It’s a staple.

Depending on your experience you want to include a professional profile that will highlight your abilities and accomplishments.

If you have experience in the industry, write a resume summary

Make sure to:

  1. Start your introduction with one or two powerful resume adjectives: ambitious, goal oriented, passionate, etc.
  2. State your job title: fashion buyer, stylist, model, retail customer service professional.
  3. The number of years of experience that you have.
  4. What you’re good at: creating product descriptions, developing relationships with vendors, managing assortments.
  5. Your most significant achievement. Quantified.

These fashion resume examples will help you put it all together:

Fashion Resume Sample—Resume Summary

Good Example
Self-motivated fashion merchandising professional with 7+ years of experience interpreting, analyzing, and explaining financial data while overseeing and ensuring budget alignment with business strategic requirements. Oversaw merchandising division for all company web store programs, managed vendor relations that helped increase revenue growth and profitability of operating units. Reduced inventory by 12% in less than a year through improved sales & operations planning and control category management.
Bad Example
An experienced fashion merchandising professional eager to contribute to team success by reducing inventory costs and improving sales & operations planning. Analyzed market trends and data to develop and execute merchandise stock assortments, and marketing strategies for assigned merchandise departments. Ready to take on a new role.

The jury’s vote?

The first example glows with accomplishments and pride and makes you look stunning and fabulous.

Quantified resume achievements are living proof that somewhere out there you have made an impact and that you have the abilities required to succeed as a fashion stylist, blogger, model, PR specialist, or any other position you’re applying for.

You’ve got what it takes to impress the panel of judges.

If you’re applying for a fashion internship or if you are writing a resume with no experience, go for a resume objective:

Fashion Internship Resume Example—Resume Objective

Good Example
Passionate and energetic Fashion Merchandising graduate with a BA from the University of California in Berkeley (GPA: 3.8). Eager to join the Old Navy internship program and support the team with purchasing, design ideation, merchandise planning, and visual merchandising. Strong time management and organizational skills acquired through volunteer work during the Memphis Fashion & Beauty Conference 2019.
Bad Example
Hello, my name is Alex and I am a recent fashion merchandising graduate with no professional experience as of yet. However, I am highly motivated and eager to learn new things and to gain valuable skills and practical work experience at your company.

Even if you’re still in school, you can make your student resume stand out by emphasizing your achievements and quantifying your results—whether it’s putting the number of research projects you were a part of or the amount of hours you spent volunteering at a conference.

Expert Hint: How to write a resume profile? Write your introduction as the very last part. After you’re done putting your experiences and skills together, cherry-pick the best bits and combine them together to make a strong, positive first impression.

3. Create a Lavish Fashion Resume Job Description and Skills Section

Roll up your sleeves. It’s your time to show off your real colors.

And by that we mean blow away the recruiter with your resume work experience section and your qualifications.

Here’s what to include in a resume’s experience section:

Fashion Buyer Resume Example—Job Description

Good Example

Buyer, Women’s

Poshion, Pittsburgh, PA

January 2018-May 2021

  • Worked with 4 departments to bring the product from conception to delivery.
  • Selected merchandise for 53 stores across the country.
  • Developed strong relationships and had constant communication with the buyers and vendor partners.
  • Coached and mentored 23 new hires.

Key Achievement: Improved total sales in the women’s department by 75% by restructuring marketing campaigns to create a clean and more impactful look and enhance product visibility and company credibility.

Bad Example

Buyer

Poshion, Pittsburgh, PA

  • Improved sales in the women’s department.
  • Worked with different teams on product launches.
  • Selected merchandise
  • Worked closely with buyers and vendors.

Ugh.

The second example screams: passé!

While the first one is dressed to the nines.

When it comes to listing skills for a resume, you want to focus on the job ad and make sure your resume is targeted.

How to do that?

Simply analyze the job posting and look for specific words that describe what is expected of the applicant.

These are going to be your resume keywords.

Here are some skills that you might want to include on your resume:

Fashion Resume Skills

  • Interpersonal skills
  • Fashion Design
  • Trend Analysis
  • Garment Construction
  • Pattern Making
  • Fashion Sketching
  • Textile Knowledge
  • Sewing and Tailoring
  • Fabric Selection

4. Polish Your Education Section

Now it’s time to spice up your resume education section and make it a reason to hire you.

So—

Apart from listing your school, degree and graduation date, make sure you also show off your GPA (if above 3.7), awards, scholarships, relevant coursework, and honors.

It should look something like this:

Education on a Fashion Industry Resume—Template

Good Example

BS in Marketing

Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, IL

2016

GPA: 3.7

Relevant coursework: Fashion planning, Fashion social media, Retail entrepreneurship, Fundamentals of PR Theory & Practice, Visual Merchandising

Expert Hint: List those extras only if you’re writing an entry-level resume. If you have more than 5 years of experience under your belt, focus on showing your work achievements instead.

5. Boost Your Fashion Resume with a Chic “Extras” Section

Did you know that “personal projects” are among the 6 first things that recruiters notice on a resume?

This is proof that the additional information section is as important as all of the other ones.

But—

Don’t just list random activities.

The hobbies and interests you list on a resume should be relevant to the job that you’re applying for. Volunteering, certificates, memberships, conferences also make a good addition.
