Marketing Manager Cover Letter Examples & Writing Guide

Most jobs enjoy a comfortable split: they’re either for the creative types, or for the more scientific minded. You need to fit both hats on your head. Not only do you need to control every aspect of the creative direction, you need to make sure it actually makes money.

James is an experienced marketing manager with results to back himself up. He focuses on the scientific side (the numbers), because that’s ultimately the only thing that will matter to his new employer. When in doubt—talk about the money you’re going to make for them.

This is how James did it:

Dear Tom,

Being a marketing manager with 6+ years of experience and a track record of results that most so-called marketing gurus can only have wet dreams about, I was elated to finally find a challenge at a company as esteemed at InventiGroup. Focusing on digital presence, I can boast successful management of $2m+ annual marketing spends, and up to 10x ROAS on certain projects, and I am ready to do just the same for you.

In my current position with NutriGroup, I manage a team of 16 creatives, media buyers, analysts and marketers, with an annual marketing spend exceeding $2m. Our portfolio includes 5 brands and 100+ products, and in the past 36 months, we have grown 500%+ in revenue ($521k in Sept 2017 to $2.67m in Sept 2020; projected to close 2020 with almost $30m of revenue). My implementing of a multi-platform content schedule combined with meticulous influencer research and hiring the right ones for us has been instrumental here. We have run over 200 campaigns with our influencers, and they have never dipped below 2x ROAS. Our cross-brand promotion strategy has enabled us to capture different customer groups, but successfully upsell them our other brands, effectively consolidating one large audience. The cross-brand upsells made $425k in 2019 alone.

I am not only outrageously effective, but also systematic and forward-thinking which is the factor that allows for this kind of scaling. To this end, I have headhunted, mentored and trained 4 incredible marketers who were already getting great results for our competitors, but after joining us, managed to increase their effectiveness by 50-150% each in the first year. I am keen to do the same for you.

When would be a good time for us to schedule a meeting or a call to discuss how a single email made my employer $100k in 3 hours?

Best Regards,

James K. Leeper

This is how to write your own cover letter for marketing management.

How to Write a Marketing Manager Cover Letter That Gets Results

1. Use a Strict Cover Letter Format

Creative is great, but readable is even better. Save the unique wireframing and color scheme for the resume—the cover letter is not a thing that needs reinventing. It needs to be clear, concise and readable.

Here’s a cover letter format that converts into leads:

Here’s what things to include in your cover letter.

2. Start With a Contact Information Header

Copy over all your details from your resume header. List your LinkedIn or website if they are good extensions of your resume and will allow a recruiter to find more detail about you. Below, list the city and date the letter was written.

Then, list the details of the hiring manager or the person dealing with your application. If you have no idea who that is, LinkedIn or a phone call should solve the mystery.

Make sure you have these details down:

[ Your Full Name]

[ Your Job Title ] (Optional)

[ Address ]

[ Phone Number ]

[ Email Address ]

[ LinkedIn Profile ] (Optional)

[ Website ] (Optional)

[ City and Date ]

[ Hiring Manager’s Full Name ]

[ Hiring Manager’s Position ]

[ Company Name ]

[ Company Street Address ]

[ City and Zip Code ]

Expert Hint: How important is a cover letter? Data shows it is an important component of the decision-making process among 83% of HR staff.

3. Identify Yourself and the Position

Every person that works in marketing must be able to get to the point quickly. Starting your cover letter, right away introduce yourself, list your years of experience and past position, and identify the position you’re applying for.

Then, hit their pain point—explain how you will benefit them in a way that’s important or relevant to them (profit is always relevant). List one or two key requirements of the job and prove you’re right for the job by listing relevant achievements, awards, numbers.

Compare against this template:

Marketing Manager Cover Letter Example: Introduction

Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],

As a marketing manager with [X]+ years of experience and a proven track record in [Achievement 1 with metric], I am elated to finally meet a challenge that is right for me, that being the open position of Marketing Manager at [Target Employer Name]. I believe I am ready to [achieve something important to the employer].

4. Tell Them Why They Should Choose You

You’re in a fortunate position of being in one of the most results-driven trades of today, so don’t waste their time by listing the different types of projects and industries you’ve worked with. You have approximately 120 words to list 3-4 achievements that will convince them to hire you.

Money talks. If you can generate results, they don’t care how you do it. Focus on your ROAS, the growth and improvements you have generated, and let them start spending the money in their head. The CEO needs a new Porsche. The 2020 model is so passé.

Marketing Manager Cover Letter Sample: Second Paragraph

As a [Previous Position Title] at [Name of Your Most Recent Company], I have acquired sizable experience in [refer to the requirements of the job], resulting in [award/achievement/statistic 1]. I also have managed to [award/achievement/statistic 2], which allowed the company to [grow / secure a result]. After I implemented [an improvement], the company was able to [result/achievement for the company]. I believe I have the experience necessary to help [Target Company Name] achieve [the goals or values important to your new employer].

Expert Hint: A PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is the gold standard in IT projects, but can be translatable to creative projects too, and can help with moving up to higher levels of management.

5. Show Them Why You Chose Them

Marketing managers are experts at toeing the line—they always need to keep their business goals in mind, but they need to see their client’s perspective, and most importantly, the target audience’s perspective. Only with all those three in mind can you make campaigns that change the world.

Fortunately, here there are no clients and only one target audience—the company you’re applying to. Think about them, their pain points, their values, and why you want to work there. Avoid writing general cover letters. Make them feel like this marketing manager cover letter was written just for them.

Because it should be. Research the business thoroughly and show that you have a genuine connection and interest in working there.

Fill in the [blanks]:

Marketing Management Cover Letter Sample: Third Paragraph

The opportunity to work at [Target Organization Name] would be an instant and seamless culture-fit that would benefit you, your clients, and myself, as [something you found out about their values] is important to me personally. I believe my track record combined with your resources will allow me to [achieve something important to the employer].

Expert Hint: In the Marketing Agency Growth Report, 12% of agencies report their greatest struggle to be retaining employees. Show the right culture-fit, researching on LinkedIn and the company website.

6. Ask For an Interview And Close the Deal

You’re a deal maker, not a deal breaker. At the end of sales copy, do you thank them for their time? Or do you include a call to action? Exactly.

Remind them the most important argument for hiring you in the closer, and ask for a meeting or call to discuss something important to them. The best marketing manager cover letters mention a huge achievement in passing, and then tease more information about it in this closer.

End your cover letter properly with a ‘Best Regards’.

This way:

Marketing Manager Cover Letter Sample: Sign Off & Call to Action

When would be a good time to have a call or a meeting to discuss how my [your best, most relevant skill/experience/their most important requirement] experience can help [Target Organization Name] achieve [something important to this employer]?

Best Regards,

[Digital Copy of Your Handwritten Signature]

Expert Hint: If you have worked mostly as a freelancer up to now, you may want to consider a functional resume layout. This way, you can list key projects and achievements under each competency, like ‘PPC ads’ or ‘Brand Strategy’, instead of having a long list of projects for the reader to scan for the right competency.
