Patricia leverages her past work experience backed up with her achievements to prove she can handle a Hollywood production. But what if you don’t have any professional experience? Don’t stress.

Even without professional work history, you can write an interview-winning cover letter. So if you’re still wondering if you need a cover letter if you’re an entry-level production assistant. Take a look at the next example that shows how a cover letter can help you land the job you want.

Here’s Christopher, Patricia’s younger friend. He hasn’t worked anywhere yet, but he took part in a few internship programs, which gave him the opportunity to see what a production assistant does. His cover letter shows that:

    Eastudio

    3008 Jarvis Street

    Buffalo, NY 14214

    Dear Mr. Cotter,

I am writing to you to inquire about the entry-level production assistant position you have advertised online. I was very excited when I found out about it, as I believe my current experience, education and acquired skills make me an ideal candidate for this role. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Film and Television from the New York Institute of Technology with a GPA of 3.6, and have since held internship positions in different companies, where I gained hands-on experience.

In your advertisement, you say you are seeking a production assistant skilled in composing and framing camera shots, scheduling meetings and maintaining calendars and assisting in the preparation of screenings, events, and other meetings. I think these accomplishments will put me in the running:

    • Organized and prepared needed audio and visual equipment to be used on shootings for clients such as Pfizer, Knoll Pharmaceuticals and Trident Gum.
    • Supported production manager for 12 shows and commercials.
    • Assisted in 3 production facilities, (studio, editing suite, control room).
    • Handled budget sheets and filed paperwork.
    • Maintained a team-oriented work ethic for 14 hours a day where I was trusted with various administrative responsibilities as well as tasks that have a direct impact on what is seen in the shot.

I believe I have the prerequisite skills to make a reliable professional that will greatly contribute to Eastudio’s culture of curiosity and diversity.

When would be a good time to connect to discuss this opportunity in more detail?

    Best Regards,

    Christopher Davis

    2. How to Write a Production Assistant Cover Letter

Here’s how to write a cover letter for production assistant positions:

    1. Use the Production Assistant Cover Letter Format

Your cover letter format mirrors your attention to detail and your ability to create a document that’s readable and inviting. One blooper and your application will fly out the window.

Follow these bullet points to properly format your application:

    • Your cover letter font should be the same as your resume font.
    • Left-align your document and single-space your text.
    • Use 1-inch margins on all sides.
    • Your cover letter’s length shouldn’t exceed one page.
    • Include these cover letter parts: Heading, Introduction, Body Paragraph, Closing.

Expert Hint: Save your application—both the resume and cover letter—as a PDF file. This will ensure the document is readable on all device types.

Now, let’s get the cameras rolling:

    2. List Your Contact Information in the Header

The heading of your cover letter is like a movie title, which can have an enormous impact on a film's success.

Now you want your cover letter to succeed, don’t you? Put yourself in the spotlight with a proper header and follow the cover letter header rules.

See this cover letter heading template for production assistant jobs to find out what information to include:

    3. Introduce Yourself and Cite the Job Title

Start your cover letter by making a good impression. Set the right tone by introducing yourself and hitting them with the most basic information they need: who you are and what you are looking for.

Address the cover letter by name, if you can. This shows that you actually took the time to write a cover letter that isn’t generic.

Here’s a few tips on how to hunt down the hiring manager’s name:

    • Check the job advertisement. The provided email address of the hiring manager should have his or her name.
    • Google the company and check their website. You may be able to find a name there.
    • Try LinkedIn. If you work in the same industry, chances are you might have some connections that might lead you to the right person.
    • Call the company. Ask the receptionist or admin assistant who to address your cover letter to.

If none of these methods help you track down the hiring manager’s name, you can always go for: “Dear Hiring Manager” or a simple “Hello”. It’s not the best salutation, but it’s good enough.

    Start with this:

Production Assistant Cover Letter (No Experience and Professionals): Introduction

    Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],

I am excited to have the opportunity to become a production assistant at [Target Company Name]. I have [X]+ years as a [Previous Position Title] under my belt, and have acquired the necessary [skill] skills to handle the volume and type of [type of work] work you deal with at [Target Company Name].

You want to connect personally with the addressee. Show your strength and briefly brush up on your hard and soft skills. This will put you right in the picture.

Expert Hint: Research shows that production assistant jobs are expected to increase by 13% by 2026. This may be a good time to pursue a career in the film industry.

    4. Give Them a Reason to Hire You

Now that you’ve bought them with a killer opening scene, it’s time for ACTION. The second paragraph of your cover letter is your opportunity to prove them you have the required skills and an understanding of the reality of the job.

Remember Patricia, our production assistant candidate? The studio she’s applying to needs someone who has experience in: coordinating production activities, preparing shooting events, calculating finances, post-production editing (Adobe Premier).

Let’s go back for a second and once again examine the middle paragraph of her cover letter:

During my time at Cutterr I have provided clerical support for TV producer and Executive producer as well as editors by coordinating and keeping records of each meeting, production rehearsal and staff attendance. Successfully organized 30+ shooting events. I have also assisted the FinanceDirector in preparing PowerPoint presentations and yearly annual reviews for all company employees. Supported producer in video editing sessions using Adobe Premier, Sony Vegas, and Final Cut Pro—assisted in the production of 2 prime-time reality TV shows: Cooking With the Stars and Moonshine Masters. Assisted Steve Mack on-set with tapings for 5 NFL Network programs.

See what she did? She tailored her application by using all the right cover letter keywords that put her ahead of the competition.

Here’s a template that you can use:

Film Production Assistant Cover Letter: Body Paragraph

Your [Target Position Name] position calls for a candidate skilled in [refer to the requirements of the job]. At [Name of Your Previous Employer], I have [refer to the requirements of the job], resulting in [a metric, achievement, or statistic]. I am confident I will be able to achieve the same with the support of [Target Company Name].

Just like you targeted your resume, you have to use key terms from the job posting to show you’ll have no problems handling new challenges. Back it all up with numbers, metrics and achievements from your resume, and you got yourself a new gig.

Expert Hint: Targeting your application will make your resume and cover letter pass the automatic scans carried out by applicant tracking systems (ATSs). Bear in mind that more than 90% of employers use these systems, so an ATS resume is a must these days.

    5. Tell Them Why You Want to Work for Them

By now you’ve made your point and chances are you might have even convinced them that you’re the candidate that they’re looking for. All you need now is a compliment or two that shows that you have gone the extra mile and done the research.

Identify something that resonates with you personally—a value that supports the company’s purpose, the projects that they work on, what the company stands for.

    Here’s an example:

Cover Letter Example for Production Assistant: Last Paragraph

Joining [Target Studio Name] would be not only a perfect opportunity for me to grow by benefiting from your know-how and [something that you admire about the company], but also an instant and seamless culture-fit that would benefit everyone as [something you found out about their values] is something that is important to me personally. I am eager to apply my [skills/expertise] to help [Target Studio Name][achieve a goal/improve/etc.].

Knowing how to write a cover letter is much more than just bragging about yourself. You must also focus on the company and its needs.

    6. Ask for an Interview and Finish With a Proper Sign-Off

Don’t end with a cliffhanger. Finish your cover letter with a big Hollywood-style scene that will have the recruiter screaming for a sequel! Your middle paragraphs show that you have relevant skills and qualifications to do the job. But this is your time to make the offer… officially.

Finish with a strong call to action by politely asking for an interview. Don’t be pushy and don’t seem desperate. Provide value by explaining what they will get if they hire you. And last but not least—sign-off your cover letter with your name, phone number and email address.

Here are a few cover letter closing examples that you can choose from:

    • Best regards,
    • Warm regards,
    • Kind regards,
    • Thank you,
    • Sincerely,
    • Respectfully,
    • Appreciatively,
    • All the best,
    • With respect,

    Use this fill-in-the-blank template:
