IT auditors evaluate a company’s IT systems and processes to identify risks to data security and detect inefficiencies. An IT auditor resume should show appropriate experience and knowledge, alongside excellent data analysis and risk management skills.

Here’s how to write an IT auditor resume that’s 100% compliant with relevant standards:

1. Evaluate the Format of Your IT Auditor Resume

It’s not all about the data it contains. Your IT auditor resume needs to look the part as well. Here’s how to format your resume for maximum efficiency:

  • Use the reverse-chronological resume layout: list the most recent information first, followed by older entries (previous jobs and education).
  • Pick a simple resume fontthat’s easy to read in 10–12 points and compatible with every device: Arial, Calibri, or Georgia are the safest bets.
  • Set your resume marginsto one inch all around the page and use 1–1.15 line spacing for clarity.
  • Make a header for your resumethat stands out on the page and provides your contact information.
  • Divide your information into clear resume sections: profile paragraph, work experience, education, key skills, additional (certifications, languages, etc.—more on those later).
  • Submit your resume as a PDF file unless the job ad specifies a different format.

Last but not least: how many pages should a resume be for IT auditor jobs?

If you have extensive experience and a long list of (relevant!) achievements to share, you can submit a two-page resume. In general, though, one-page resumes are the preferred standard these days.

2. Identify Your Strengths in Your Resume Profile Paragraph

Your resume profile has one key function: To get across the message that you’re a viable—or better yet, the best—candidate for the job. The idea is to entice the recruiter to read the rest of your application by showing them what you’re capable of in the very first words of your resume.

Here’s how to achieve this with 2–4 sentences:

  1. Start with an adjective (efficient, detail-oriented, proven)
  2. Add your job title and years of experience (IT auditor with 5+ years of experience)
  3. Mention the value you’ll bring to the company if hired—make sure to use the name of the company to which you’re applying (eager to ensure full compliance and maximum data security and systems efficiency at XYZ Company)
  4. Outline a couple of your best achievements in relevant tasks (increased security by 10%, cut projected risks of data leaks by 20%, boosted team efficiency by 15%)

This type of resume profile is called a resume summary. Since it involves on-the-job achievements, you’ll need at least a few years of relevant experience to write one of those.

If you’re writing an entry-level resume, an objective will be the better choice. Resume objective statements rely on accomplishments and skills from college, projects, other jobs, and internships to showcase your abilities.

Bear in mind that it’s uncommon for employers to accept IT auditors with no relevant work experience. If you’re a recent grad looking to become an auditor, you may need to start by getting some experience in more general IT roles, such as a systems analyst or a database administrator.

Expert hint: In case you get stuck, work on other sections of your resume first and come back to the profile towards the end. You’ll have a much clearer idea of what you could include.

3. Highlight Your Achievements in Your IT Auditor Job Descriptions and Pick the Right Skills

Analyzing IT systems in a small tech startup is worlds apart from auditing a large medical facility or an educational institution. Each requires a unique approach to ensure that the conclusions will bring about an improvement.

It’s similar with your resume: every time you tackle a new job application, you need to adapt your strategy to suit the employer’s needs. Targeting your resume in this way can show the employer you’re not only a good candidate for the role—you’re the best there is.

Your work experience resume section is where the employer will search for clues about your suitability, so it’s vital you tailor it accordingly.

Here’s how to write effective IT auditor job descriptions:

  1. Re-read the job ad. What skills is the employer after, in particular?
  2. Brainstorm examples from your previous jobs when you used those skills to complete relevant tasks or achieve a specific result.
  3. Turn those examples into bullet points for your resume. Make use of action verbs and numbers to add impact to your writing.

By filling your resume with achievements that are targeted to the employer’s needs, you’re sure to stand out from the crowd!

But that’s not the only goal: this method enables you to add keywords to your resume, which makes it more likely to pass the ATS test.

Let’s break that down: ATS, or Applicant Tracking Systems, are recruitment automation tools that scan and sort incoming applications and, in some cases, grade their relevance to the job.

By including keywords from the job advertisement (skills the employer listed), you’re boosting your relevance score, making your resume more ATS-compliant, and ensuring your application will reach the recruiter.

Add some keywords to your resume skills section, too—pick 10 of your most relevant abilities, including a mix of hard (trade-specific) and soft (people) skills.

4. Review Your Education

Now comes the easy part: Listing your education on your resume. All you need to do in this section is to provide the name of your highest completed degree, along with where you obtained it and when.

If you have a Master’s degree, feel free to list your Bachelor’s underneath. There’s no need to mention your high school unless that’s your only education or you’re still in the process of getting your first college degree.

If you’re writing a resume with no experience, you can add bullet points to your top degree, listing additional details that show your skills. Think relevant coursework and extracurriculars, projects, awards, and other academic accomplishments (e.g. Dean’s list, GPA that’s 3.7 or above).

5. Complete Your IT Auditor Resume With Extra Sections

What else can you share with the recruiter to make it clear you’re well-suited for this job? Whatever your answer may be, that’s what additional sections on your resume are for.

You can add each type of information under a separate heading or, if you’re including a mix of things, group them under one collective “Additional Activities” section. Either way, here are some ideas for common additions to IT auditor resumes:

Just make sure that everything you include is directly relevant to the job. This is also the case for your interests: only list them on your resume if they’re in some way related to your profession or the profile/industry of the company.

Before you go, remember to write a cover letter to submit along with your resume. It’s easier than you think, and it can make or break your application, so it’s definitely worth the time!
