You’re there behind the scenes making contributions to the future of computing. Use your computer engineer resume to show you’ve got what it takes to really make a mark.
Algorithms and semiconductors, heat transfer and machine learning: Front-line recruiters usually have a surface-level understanding of these things.
But, you’ll need more than surface-level sheen to impress specialist hiring managers. Your computer engineer resume has to appeal to both the IT recruiter with a pile of resumes on her desk and the 30-year hardware engineering veteran who’s heading a new project.

Now here’s how to write a computer engineer resume that’ll melt their heat pipes:
1. Choose the Right Computer Engineer Resume Format
There’s getting it done, and then there’s doing it efficiently and elegantly. Make your resume format minimalist and clean. Here’s how:
Computer Engineer Resume Format
Use the reverse-chronological resume format—it’s what’s expected.
Choose a suitable resume font like a Noto in 11–12 pt.
Go with a one-page resume. A two-page resume is fine if you’ve got many years of varied experience. Try not to go over two pages, though.
Use the core resume sections(Resume Heading, Profile, Experience, Education, and Skills) plus at least one extra section.
Saving your resume in PDF rather than *.docx seems like a no-brainer. But, always double check that something else isn’t required. Remember that you need an ATS resume, first and foremost. PDF files aren't a problem for most Applicant Tracking Systems (ATSs), but some do struggle with them. So if the employer wants a good old Word file, give them a good old Word file.
2. Write a Tempting Computer Engineer Resume Objective or Summary
Fit in by including a resume profile. Stand out by writing one that wows from the get go.
Not your first computer engineering rodeo? Then start with a resume summary.
Use:
One adjective (efficient, detail-oriented, passionate)
Job title (Computer Engineer)
Years of experience (4+, 5+)
How you’ll help (by helping to bring new design solutions to market)
Two or three of your most impressive achievements (devised testing regimen that catches 13% more flaws, pushed more than 20,000 lines of firmware code in a year)
The first one is concrete, quantified, and focused on bringing benefits to the employer.
Recently graduated and don’t have many computer engineering achievements to draw upon yet? Write a resume objective instead. Focus on any placement and internship work you’ve done, your studies, and any relevant, non-computer engineering jobs you’ve had.
Computer Engineer Resume Objective—Examples
And again, the second example is all about what the candidate wants from their new employer. The problem is, employers don’t really care—their focus is on extracting value out of employees.
In a boot loop writing your resume profile? Write it last. It’s much easier once you have your job descriptions and skills done.
3. Create Compelling Computer Engineering Job Description and Skills Sections
How to write job descriptions for computer engineers:
Go back over the job ad.
Flag the computer engineering skills and duties it mentions.
Cycle through times you’ve wowed employers with those skills.
Write resume bullet points that quantify the results of your work.
These computer engineer resume examples show how:
Computer Engineering Resume Job Description
The second one’s not bad, but—‘Not bad’ doesn’t get interviews.
One more thing: You’ll need a skills section. Let the job ad guide your choice of skills to put on your resume. Cover everything they mention and not much more.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a way into computer engineering that doesn’t include the right kind of degree.
So. list your degrees, schools, and years attended. But then, add bullets that point to key skills. This computer engineering resume example shows how:
Computer Engineer Resume—Sample Education Section
Short on computer engineering experience? Expand your education section by including projects, classes, and accomplishments.
5. Load Your Computer Engineer Resume With Added Sections
The things that make you better than the next computer engineer—Won’t always fit under categories like experience, education, and skills. So take the bull by the horns and add one or two extra resume sections:
Want to try a different look? There's 21 more. A single click will give your document a total makeover. Pick a cover letter template here.
Key Points
For a computer engineering resume that gets interviews:
Use the computer engineer resume template up top. It’s the resume equivalent of clean code written in a cozy Linux environment.
Put computer engineering achievementsin your summary, work history, and education sections as proof of your skills.
Choose the right computer engineer skills to list in your skills section. The job ad will let you know what the right skills are.
Write a computer engineering cover letter. Use it to showcase your accomplishments and really billboard your passion for the job.
