The example above is not terrible—but it’s not great either. It doesn’t give any specifics for the reader. It would be too difficult for a hiring manager to guess whether this is a good candidate.

OK, but how about job applicants with no experience? Should they write a profile, too?

Yes—but a different one. A retail sales associate resume objective is the best choice for inexperienced candidates. It should put emphasis on the candidate’s knowledge, transferable skills, readiness for work, and understanding of what the job entails. Like in the example below:

The first retail sales associate's resume objective is excellent at selling the candidate’s assets. The second one, not so much—it focuses on what the candidate wants instead of what they can bring to the table.

To describe your retail sales experience on your resume, mention the right job duties, such as: advising customers, handling cash and card payments, stocking shelves, arranging displays, managing inventory, and hitting sales goals. Use resume keywords that reflect the job requirements.

4. Add Education to Your Resume

Good news—degrees are not required for most retail jobs. In fact, almost a third of all first jobs in the U.S. were in retail, meaning that a high-school diploma is more than enough.
