Here’s how to write a job-scoring technical recruiter resume: 

1. Apply the Right Format to Your Technical Recruiter Resume

Margin-to-margin 9-point Times New Roman across 4 pages, inspirational quotes in place of resume sections, rambling introductions that would put plenty of online dating profiles to shame, and completely irrelevant and slightly disturbing hobbies.

Avoid such basic-yet-career-ruining mistakes by sticking with these resume format best practices

Technical Recruiter Resume Format

  • Use the standard, reverse-chronological resume format. Even if you’re not put off by functional resumes, plenty of other recruiters (and ATSs) still find them confusing. 
  • Choose a slick, modern resume font that puts the ‘tech’ in ‘technical recruiter.’ Trebuchet, Gill Sans, or even Arial will give your application a 21st-century look. 
  • Set one-inch resume margins and include plenty of white space between sections to give your text breathing room. 
  • Try to fit everything on one page; that’s the best resume length for most positions. 
  • Go with the classic resume sections: profile (introduction), work experience, education, skills, and additional information. Give them headings to make them legible to the ATS. (This means no ‘professional journey’ in place of ‘work experience’)

Assuming no file format is specified in the job ad, submit your resume as a PDF to keep the layout looking as intended.

Make the reader’s job easier by turning your resume profile statement into a highlight reel of your application. Aim for 2–4 sentences and include the following: 

  1. Anadjective that sums up your work ethic or a critical soft skill (detail-oriented, reliable, efficient)
  2. Your job title and years of experience (technical recruiter with X+ years of experience)
  3. What you can offer the company if hired (looking to apply my critical thinking skills and tech industry insights into sourcing the best available talent for XYZ Company)

A resume summary of this kind is only an option if you have relevant work experience. As an entry-level candidate, open with a resume objective statement instead: 

Focus on transferable skills, highlight your tech expertise, and mention achievements from college, volunteering, internships, or other jobs. 

Starting your resume is arguably the most challenging part of the process—if you’re struggling, don’t worry. Leave the introduction for now and return to it once the rest of your application is ready. Identifying your career highlights will be easier after you’ve put everything on paper.

So, use your resume work experience section to prove you’re their purple squirrel.

  1. Review the job ad. What essential skills and experience can you extract from it? 
  2. When have you used those skills or performed those tasks positively in previous jobs? Come up with a few relevant examples per job. 
  3. Make those examples sound like accomplishments to put on your resume. Use resume power words (achieved, managed, maintained, innovated, introduced, spearheaded) and add plenty of numbers to quantify your performance. 

Around 80–100% of the things you describe should directly answer the requirements in the job ad. Skip irrelevant or obvious duties, and take the time to tweak this section every time you apply for a different job. 

Those skills and phrases from the job ad can work to your advantage as keywords for the ATS, depending on the software used by your future employer. Make sure those resume keywords are relevant and plentiful by including them in your resume skills section, too—

4. Add Information About Your Education

You’re bound to know how to structure your resume education section, but let’s go through it just in case: 

If you have a few years’ experience, state your highest level of schooling, the awarding institution, and the dates of attendance. That’s all! 

For future tech recruiters writing a resume with no experience, a more thorough look at academic history will be more appropriate. Your education is likely your best asset right now, so use it! 

Add bullet points to your education section with extracurriculars, GPA (if it was 3.7 or higher), projects, scholarships, and other accomplishments. Listing relevant coursework on your resume can help you mention some keywords from the ad, such as if you studied HR, recruitment, IT, or another related subject.
