Stockers work in retail—their primary responsibility is to stock shelves with correctly priced products. They may also arrange product displays, unload deliveries, and handle other duties as needed. A stocker resume should prove that you have the skills required by the employer.
Here’s how to write a best-selling stocker resume:
Products on shelves are organized by category, type, brand, purpose—all to make the store easy to navigate for customers. (And to make them spend more time and money in the store, but that’s another discussion altogether.)
Similarly, on your resume, you need to organize information in a way that’ll make immediate sense to recruiters. If they can find what they’re looking for at a glance at your resume, you’re already doing better than some of your competition.
Here’s how to format your resume to make sure it makes a good first impression:
Unless the job advertisement includes a preferred file format for resume submissions, use a PDF. PDFs are more reliable in keeping your resume layout looking as intended.
Recruiters are often about as busy as the average store right before Christmas—They might not have enough time to read every resume in full or to notice every detail. So, make their job easier for them (and score some points in the process) by including a profile paragraph on your resume
The purpose of a profile is to highlight your best skills and accomplishments, proving you’re a valuable candidate from the very first sentences of your resume.
Here’s a formula you can use:
This type of profile is called a resume summary statement, since it literally sums up the key information from your resume (with an offer thrown in). If you’re writing a resume with no experience, you’ll have a tough time with step 5—
So, write a resume objective statement instead. You can use the same structure but with transferable skills and experience in place of relevant achievements. Mention wins from other professions, school, volunteering, or projects to show your potential.
Not sure how to start your resume? Don’t worry—come back to the profile paragraph at the end. Once you’ve finished writing about your experience at work and school, it’ll be easy to lift key information into your profile.
Before you delve into writing lists of duties and responsibilities from your previous jobs, know this:
There’s a reason why tailored products always cost more than their off-the-shelf equivalents. They simply suit the user’s needs better. That’s also why customized, targeted resumes tend to do much better than generic, copy-pasted applications: they address the employer’s needs and requirements directly.
And luckily, when it comes to your resume, you can (and should) tailor it to the job at no expense—other than a few extra minutes of your time.
Here’s how to write a stocker job description for your resume work experience section:
This kind of resume will leave the recruiter with the impression that you’re the perfect candidate for the role—you fit every requirement!
But this strategy has one more advantage: Most medium and large companies use ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) software to scan resumes. If you’re applying to a chain store, you can be reasonably sure they use an ATS. This software sorts incoming applications and, in some cases, gives them a score based on how well they match the job posting.
By including those skills from the ad—known as resume keywords—you’re boosting that score for your resume. Easy!
Add more skills (or reinforce your message by mentioning the same keywords again) in your resume skills section—pick up to 10 of the most relevant ones from the job ad, your experience, and this list:
Expert hint: It’s not all keywords: in order for a resume to be ATS-friendly, it also needs to follow the right formatting. Luckily, you sorted out your resume format already, in the first step of this guide!

Your resume education section will be quick and easy to make: All you need are the basic details—the name of your highest qualification, where you got it, and when. If you have a few years of work experience, that will be enough!
For those with no experience: your stocker resume will look pretty empty. Use your education section to fill more of the page and highlight some of your skills. You can do that by listing classes you excelled at (especially if it was math), mentioning your accomplishments, extracurriculars, projects, and anything else that shows what you can do.
There’s got to be more to it than an intro, work experience, and education, right? Right. Those were the obligatory sections—now, let’s talk about optional things you can include.
Depending on your circumstances and the position to which you’re applying, consider adding some of the following:
And that’s nearly everything—All that’s left to do now is to write a cover letter that’s as good as your resume, and you’ll be learning the ropes at your new job in no time at all.
