Discover how to write a mentor resume bound to get top marks:

1. Format Your Mentor Resume Correctly

You’re an authority figure. The first way to show it on your resume is by formatting it in a way that makes it inviting and easy to read.

Here’s how:

  • Apply the reverse-chronological resume format to highlight your most recent accomplishments.
  • Use an easy-to-read resume font in 11–12 pt. Arial, Helvetica, or Calibri are always great choices. It doesn’t need to be original!
  • Leave 1-inch resume margins to give your content some breathing space.
  • Stick to a one-page resume if possible. Go to a second page if you have tons of experience, but remember to only include the most relevant information.
  • Order your resume sections like this: Header, Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Additional)

Unless stated otherwise in the job ad, save your resume as a PDF. It’s the safest way to preserve the resume layout

2. Write an Interesting Mentor Resume Objective or Summary

How do you start successful cooperation? It’s always a good idea to introduce yourself!

On a resume, you can do it in one of two ways: with a resume summary or objective.

If you already have some relevant work experience, write a resume summary

  1. One adjective (enthusiastic, diligent, hard-working)
  2. Job title (Mentor)
  3. Years of experience (2+, 3+)
  4. What you’ll do to help (create successful development paths)
  5. A couple of your most impressive achievements (decreased development time for apprentices by 25%)

Write a resume objective if you’re not quite that experienced just yet. Think about any academic projects you’ve completed, volunteer work, or other transferable skills relevant to the job opening. Use those instead of career accomplishments to show your potential.

Expert Hint: If you don’t know what to say, write the profile last. You’ll have a much easier time!

3. Add Convincing Mentor Job Description and Skills Sections

The work experience section is the most critical part of your mentor's resume. Nail it, and your chances of getting hired increase enormously.

How to write a job description for a mentor:

  1. Read the job ad carefully.
  2. Note all resume keywords—skills and requirements needed to succeed.
  3. Think about times you’ve shown those skills and impressed your colleagues and supervisors.
  4. Write resume bullet points based on those examples. Focus on accomplishments rather than basic duties. Use metrics and action words where possible.

In this way, you’ve targeted your resume to the job ad. Repeat this process and update your resume every time you apply for a different job—it really pays off to submit tailored applications each time.

But work experience is not enough to land your dream job. You need a customized resume skills section as well, just to underline the fact that you’re the ideal candidate.

Take another look at the mentoring skills from the job ad. Which ones are your strongest suits? List 5–10 of those in a separate section.

It may include some of these, for instance:

4. Give Your Education a Separate Section

Education is a crucial part of any job application—but doubly so on a mentor resume, for obvious reasons.

Here’s how to write a convincing education resume section:

  • If you’re an experienced candidate, the task is simple. State your highest completed degree, the name of the awarding institution, and graduation date. That’s it!
  • If you’re writing a resume with no experience, add additional information, for example, extracurricular activities, relevant coursework, projects, academic achievements, and a sufficiently high GPA (3.7+).

5. Boost Your Mentor Resume with Extra Sections

Now the cherry on the top of your resume! Something to make your mentor resume special—extra sections.

Add one or two additional sections under their own headings. What you include will depend on your individual circumstances, but the idea is to cover anything that’s relevant to the job but doesn’t fit into any of the other resume sections. For example:

Expert Hint: Do you want to increase your chances of getting an interview invite? Write a cover letter explaining why you’re the perfect candidate for the job.
