Dear Sean,
I am more than pleased to submit my application for the position of Senior Wealth Manager at Bluestone. With 5+ years of experience at Whiterock under my belt and experience in managing a portfolio of 100+ clients, $230m invested, I believe I am ready for new challenges such as helping Bluestone to expand to the Latin America markets both in terms of investment, and investors—my native Spanish and fully fluent Portuguese coming invaluable.
I understand a large part of the scope of responsibilities will be devoted to expanding to Latin America. I have experience in meticulously scouring for, and successfully approaching clients, often finding investment opportunities along the way. In 2017 and 2018, I have taken the company prize for most new investment secured ($24m, and $29m respectively). In 2019, I was not eligible, as I have been promoted and given responsibility of managing a portion of our existing portfolio, with the targets of 1% ROA and 5% ROE. We closed the year with a 1.19% ROA, and a 9.2% ROE. As a result of these results, new business flooded in, and we started 2020 by signing 12 new clients and adding their combined $44m into the portfolio. Since 2019, I have also trained and mentored 4 new financial advisors for my team (to make 11 people total), instituting a clear competition to stimulate new investment. Together, these four have secured $8m of new investment in 2019.
By taking over the post of Senior Wealth Manager at Whiterock, I would finally be able to put my Spanish-Portuguese multilingualism to work, an opportunity that I do not have in my current position. I also believe I have the proven track record to be entrusted with a larger portfolio and team than the one I currently manage.
When could we meet to discuss where and how we should start our Latin America operations?
Best Regards,
Maria S. Hernandez

Maria is obviously no amateur.
However, she was one once. Just like Gary. While still at college, he’s writing a cover letter for a finance internship that will require him to develop a book of business by sourcing prospective clients and recommending investment products based on their goals.
Everyone has to start somewhere, so here’s Gary’s cover letter for a finance internship with no experience.

Dear Sean,
I was elated to find out you have opened recruitment for the 2020 Summer Finance Internship program. As a 3.85 GPA student in the last year of the BBA Finance program at the Bauer College of Business, University of Houston, I am also active as the Treasurer in the Finance Association, where we have over 250 members and 50 events per semester.
During my studies at the Bauer College of Business, I have made the Dean’s every semester. I have come top of the class in Financial Accounting and Macroeconomics, all while maintaining the duties of the Treasurer of the FA, handling the financials of 50+ events per semester ($25,000 budget per semester). Since 2014, I have been trading Forex, and after initial beginner’s losses, I have managed to secure an average monthly income of $1250 since I have started college. In 2019, I passed the FINRA Securities Industry Essentials Exam, so I am ready to take my FINRA Series 7. I have also made extra cash by preparing over 25 business and personal tax returns for my private clients, the largest of my clients being a local company with a $1.1m turnover.
Getting my start at Bluestone Private Banking would be an ideal opportunity for me—to join a globally present private bank, and be constantly challenged to perform on the highest level. Everything I have done up to now has only been preparation for this moment.
Could we schedule a meeting or a call for me to tell you how I saved my biggest client over $40,000 on his 2019 tax bill?
Kind Regards,
Gary Ingram

Let’s write your own finance cover letter.
Here’s how to write a job-winning finance cover letter:
Often, it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. Same here. The way you write something can send your letter to the bin faster than Macy’s to the bottom of the stock market in 2019. Show that you are concise, organized, and thought-out by nailing the format of your finance cover letter.
Here is the business cover letter format:
Next, let’s talk about what to include in your cover letter.
This is the easy part. First, make sure the header of your finance cover letter matches your resume header. Underneath your details leave a line, enter city and date, another line, and the person you are addressing to. If you don’t know who you’re writing to, use LinkedIn, or just call them up.
Make sure you have these details down:
[ Your Full Name]
[ Your Job Title ] (Optional)
[ Address ]
[ Phone Number ]
[ Email Address ]
[ LinkedIn Profile ] (Optional)
[ City and Date ]
[ Hiring Manager’s Full Name ]
[ Hiring Manager’s Position ]
[ Company Name ]
[ Company Street Address ]
[ City and Zip Code ]
Expert Hint: If you’re applying online, there are some specific issues to keep in mind when sending your legal cover letter electronically, which our email cover letter guide will clue you up on. At ResumeLab, there is also always more cover letter tips, dos and don’ts to know.
Time is money. This job happens to be all about money. Don’t waste people’s time with your finance cover letter. Address your cover letter by first name. There are places where ‘Dear Sir/Madam’ buys a ticket to the bin. Starting your cover letter, right away state the position you’re applying for.
You only have a few seconds to grab someone’s attention—so right away, give them a good reason to keep on reading, like listing one of the key requirements of the job and supplying a metric that proves your aptitude in this branch.
Start with this:
Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],
When I saw that you are recruiting a [Target Position Name] at [Target Organization Name], right away I knew there was no time to be wasted. With [number of years]+ years as a [Previous Position Title] under my belt, I have [relevant achievement] and developed the necessary [very strong relevant skills you have] skills that will allow me to handle [Key requirement from the job posting] at [Target Organization Name].
Expert Hint: A Journal of Finance study has some groundbreaking insight. MBAs who experienced down stock markets during their study are less likely to apply for Wall Street jobs. However, the few that do, make a significant amount of money more than their counterparts. If you graduated after a crash, go against the tide and head to the Street. You’ll have less competition and make bank.

There are a lot of so-called A-type personalities in this field. For better or for worse. Many finance cover letters will be overflowing with ego and grandiosity. Keep it concise. Finance is a world of number, projections. Allow someone to make those projections regarding you based on data.
Provide a quantified figure, estimate, or projection for every point you have regarding your suitability to the role. Make it easy for them, don’t hide behind big words and empty statements. Demonstrate your impact—and preferably, communicate it in the language of finance—money.
Like this:
Your [Target Position Name] position calls for a candidate skilled in [refer to the requirements of the job]. At [Name of Your Previous Employer], I have [refer to the requirements of the job], resulting in [a metric, achievement, or statistic] for the company. I have sourced and secured [X] investors with a total investment of $[X] in this time period, developing my approach and selling skills. I spent a lot of my time [refer to the requirements of the job], where I was able to [an improvement, achievement or breakthrough you made]. My proven expertise in securing new clients as well as [refer to the requirements of the job] will allow me to step up and help secure record profits for [Target Position Name] this year.
Expert Hint: Applying with scant experience? Straight out of college? Trying to get that internship? Increase your value with relevant FINRA qualifications, starting with the Securities Industry Essentials, and the relevant Series numbers of the representative-level exams. The SIE starts at $60, and will set you apart from writing a cover letter for an internship in finance.
Remember what we said about the so-called A-type personalities? Well, as it happens, a lot of them made it. Some of them will be reading your finance cover letter. When reading the achievements from your resume, they will be comparing you to their past selves.
Give their ego a little boost. You may not know who they are, or which way to stroke them, so research the company thoroughly and find out exactly what, and how they do it. See if you can’t find an old alumnus of your college to ask about their company goals and values.
Fill in the [blanks]:
Joining [Target Organization Name] would be not only a perfect opportunity for to grow by benefiting from your know-how and [a cutting edge process/method/niche], but also an instant and seamless culture-fit that would benefit everyone as [something you found out about their values] is something that is important to me personally.
A-Type personality.
Now, channel it.
Close the deal. Sign off your cover letter professionally, but just before you do, ask for a call or a meeting.
Give them another reason, just in case they need more convincing.
Like this:
When would be a good time to have a call or a meeting to discuss how my [your best, most relevant skill/experience/their most important requirement] experience can help [Target Organization Name] achieve [something important to this employer]?
