How to Write a Resume for Google?

Google jobs are highly desirable for professionals in many fields, including software engineering, product design, marketing, and talent management. To write a good Google resume, you must prove you’re a valuable asset for the company by highlighting qualities that match the job requirements.

Here are the steps you must complete to write an effective resume for Google jobs:

1. Choose the Best Google Resume Format

You might feel tempted to create a unique job application that will stun the recruiters. After all, Google values talent and creativity, right?

Well, yes, they do. But they also value their time. And most likely use ATS scanners for initial screening.

Don’t go for a visual or video resume. Just follow the tried and tested reverse-chronological resume style.

Here’s how to create a professional resume format for Google jobs:

You can also save time and try pre-made free resume templates. You can find many Google Docs resume templates available online, or try free templates for Word.

If you need a more detailed guide on writing a resume from scratch, check here: How to Write a Resume from Start to Finish

Expert Hint: Before applying for a job at Google, do thorough research about the position, the department’s goals, and the Google office you’re applying to. Check testimonials from former employees and check what the current ones have to say about their jobs publicly. It will give you insight into work conditions and the hiring process.

2. Write a Strong Resume Profile

A resume must start with a bang. And no, memes or animated GIFs are not the way to go. Start with a powerful resume profile that will keep the hiring manager reading till the very end.

You’ve got two options:

  • Resume summary: this profile type highlights your career accomplishments and is best for experienced professionals.
  • Resume objective: this one focuses on a specific goal you can achieve for the employer and is best for entry-level candidates or those changing careers.

And here’s an everlasting formula for writing a profile:

  • Start with a strong personality trait, such as being efficient, personable, and motivated.
  • Add your job title, degree, or qualification.
  • Follow with years of experience or additional information about your background.
  • Provide a specific goal you can achieve for the company.
  • Highlight a career achievement or your specialist knowledge.

If you do it well, you’ll increase your chances of becoming one of the 150,000+ Google employees. However, don’t try to upsell your qualifications. According to Harvard research, overconfidence is one of the telltale signs of toxic workers, and Google does its best to avoid hiring those.

The examples below show resume summaries that fit the bill:

Google Resume Example: Resume Summary

Good Example

Certified Professional Machine Learning Engineer with a background in software engineering. Eager to support information processing efforts at Google using custom-designed machine learning algorithms. Decreased the number of fake user accounts by 47% by developing an algorithm detecting AI-generated identification photos.

This is how you get jobs. This resume summary ticks all the boxes listed above.

Bad Example

I’m a personable software engineer with 2+ years of experience, hoping to broaden my knowledge of machine learning. I worked on numerous software development and machine learning projects in the past.

Yawn. There will be thousands of similar profiles on very forgettable resumes.

I’ve mentioned that entry-level candidates should write a resume objective. Yes, Google hires entry-level applicants, too. They also provide apprenticeship programs—so if you’re writing a Google apprenticeship resume, a career objective can be a good option for you.

Check these examples:

Google Apprenticeship Resume Objective

Good Example

Motivated second-year student working toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. Keen to use C++, Java, and Python programming skills to collaborate with software developers and improve Google’s products. Won the Student Project of The Year award in 2022 by creating a content aggregator application in Python and Django.

That’s how a person shines. They know what they want to achieve, and they know how to do it.

Bad Example

Ambitious computer science student keen to join the Google apprentice program to develop software engineering skills. Excellent academic record and highly developed interpersonal skills.

Oh, no—this candidate won’t make the cut. Why? Because this objective doesn’t say anything specific. Recruiters don’t have time to wonder if the candidate is well-suited for the job. They want to know it straight away.

3. Use the Google XYZ Resume Strategy When Describing Work Experience

When writing a targeted resume for your dream job at Google, it’s worth checking the advice posted on Google’s career pages. Why? Because it describes the mysterious Google XYZ resume strategy:

“Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z].”

But how are you supposed to use this formula in your resume?

Apply it when describing your career achievements. It might be difficult to serve all your previous responsibilities this way, so focus on presenting accomplishments with the Google XYZ formula.

Check the examples below to understand how it’s done. The accomplishment [X] is in yellow, measurement [Y] in green, and the action undertaken [Z] in orange.

Google XYZ Resume Examples

  • Reduced the number of toxic user comments in a customer’s shopping application by 17% by creating a classification model based on natural language processing.
  • Decreased the number of fake user profiles in a booking app by 47% by developing an algorithm that accurately distinguishes between AI-generated photographs and real customer photos.

See what I’m talking about?

OK, you know how to use the Google XYZ resume formula now. But the work experience section of your resume must also include other types of info.

Here’s how to describe your work experience on a resume:

  • Start with the most recent position.
  • List your job title, company name, location, and work period.
  • Name 4–5 work duties, starting with the most impressive ones.
  • Use resume action verbs to describe your responsibilities.
  • Add 1 key achievement for each position, if possible.

Check the example below:

Google Resume Example: Work Experience

Good Example

Software Engineer

Fawn&Moss, Billerica, MA

March 2020–present

Key responsibilities:

  • Reduced the number of toxic user comments in a customer’s shopping application by 17% by creating a classification model based on natural language processing.
  • Built machine learning algorithms using a variety of frameworks, including TensorFlow and Keras.
  • Liaised with product owners and development team members on a monthly basis to identify problems that could be solved using machine learning algorithms.
  • Designed and implemented rapid software prototypes as part of the Agile development process.

Key achievement:

  • Decreased the number of fake user profiles in a booking app by 47% by developing an algorithm that accurately distinguishes between AI-generated photographs and real customer photos.

This work experience section provides specific information about the candidate’s job duties. And that’s what hiring managers want to see.

Bad Example
  • Responsible for creating machine learning algorithms to solve problems.
  • Worked with other departments to plan objectives and deadlines.
  • Helped with software testing and QC processes.

Now, this wouldn’t impress any of Google’s hiring managers. Why? Because it’s vague and makes the candidate seem idle.

There’s another thing that recruiters want to see near your work experience. And that’s a resume skill section. But don’t stuff it with any skills— add only the ones that fit the job requirements.

Here’s what you could list:

Google Resume: Sample Skills

Remember that the skill section isn’t the only place where your abilities should show. Refer to them also in the work experience, education, or even in the additional resume sections.

4. Add Education to Your Google Resume

You might be happy to hear that education isn’t the most important hiring factor for tech jobs. However, it’s still worth adding it to your resume.

Create the education section of your resume this way:

  • List your highest qualification first
  • Add the name of the institution
  • Mention the years of study or the graduation year

If you’re writing an entry-level resume or a Google apprenticeship resume, you can also provide the following information:

  • GPA, especially if it’s higher than 3.75
  • Relevant coursework
  • Academic accomplishments
  • Extracurricular activities

Look at the sample below:

Google Resume: Sample Education Section

Good example

Master of Science in Computational Science and Engineering

MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, Cambridge, MA

September 2018–June 2020

  • GPA: 3.9
  • Relevant coursework: Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing with Deep Learning, Natural Language Understanding

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

Boston University, Boston, MA

September 2014–June 2018

GPA: 3.81

5. Pick Additional Resume Sections

It’s not the end yet! You still have a chance to make your Google resume more unique than others.

Choose additional sections for your resume:

  • Associations and memberships
  • Awards
  • Certifications and licenses
  • Hobbies and personal interests
  • Language proficiency
  • Personal projects
  • Publications
  • Volunteer work

The examples below show how to do it:

Google Resume Example: Additional Sections

Good Example

Certification

  • Professional Machine Learning Engineer, Google Cloud, March 2021
  • Oracle Certified Professional, Java SE 8 Programmer, December 2020

Languages

  • French—Advanced
  • German—Intermediate

Personal Projects

  • Created a Twitter and Facebook feed analyzer for digital marketers to track new viral stories and meme trends.
  • Contributed to 10+ content pieces on data mining for The Future is Meow in 2021–2022.

See? Simple, yet effective. It’s not really about stuffing your Google resume with as much information as possible. Be selective and mention only the things that can support your efforts.

Bad Example

Interests:

  • Gaming
  • Running

That sounds cool and all, but it isn’t really relevant or valuable for the recruiter.

How Many Resumes Does Google Receive Each Year?

You probably suspect it’s a lot. And you’re right. Google gets around 3 million resumes per year. Approximately 20,000 positions are filled annually, so the acceptance rate is 0.67%.

What does it mean to you? That it’s not enough to be an expert in your field. You also need to have a resume that will show it to the recruitment team. That’s why it’s worth spending extra time on polishing your application for Google.
