Let’s start writing your own CV right now.

1. Use a Professional CV Format

When applying for jobs that include handling large sums of money, it’s better to look organised and composed. You’d be surprised at the amount of jobs that people missed out on because of uneven margins. Get all your beans in order.

Format your CV this way:

Time to balance the books.

2. Write an Accountant Assistant CV Objective or Summary

Sometimes you look at a balance sheet and know something is off. Sometimes, a recruiter looks at a CV and knows this is the person they want. The best chance of this happening is with a really solid CV profile.

By backing up your expertise with numbers and targeting at the requirements of the position, you’re maximising your chances. You can build an incredible CV summary statement by following this formula:

  • Who are you? (One power adjective, accounting assistant, years+ of experience)
  • How well can you do the job we need you to do? What makes you special? (Use numbers and achievements.)
  • What are you hoping to do for this employer?

And here it is applied:

Accounting Assistant CV Summary

Good Example
Methodical accounting assistant with 3+ years of experience performing 7,000 yearly ACH/Check/T&E payment transactions with 100% accuracy rate. Processed up to 400 invoices monthly with no errors. Proven track record of innovating with Zapier and SalesHandy, improving on-time collection rate by 6.5%. Looking to leverage this experience in a corporate in-house role with Sony.
Bad Example
Experienced accounting assistant with considerable experience in billing, collections, reconciliation and month-end-closing. Known to be improving collection rates and times by implementing new procedures and automations.

If you were the recruiter, who would you prefer to ask for an interview?

Use the same approach when writing a CV objective statement. Focus on internships, volunteering, and transferable skills and add numbers where possible.

Accounting Assistant CV Objective

Good Example
Detail-oriented accounting intern with 3 months of experience in financial administration. Adept at data entry (80 WPM) and preparing balance sheets. Spotted an error that helped the company save £1000 monthly. Seeking to leverage analytical skills at Booksey.
Bad Example
Recent graduate with no experience in accounting looking for first accounting position.

Expert Hint: It’s easier to write a CV profile when the rest of your CV is ready.

3. Get In the Good Books With A Perfect Job Description

Fortunately for you, most accounting assistant CVs will show that they are better with numbers than writing CVs. For most people, work experience is a list of tasks performed. By adding numbers and achievements, you put those into perspective and make your CV unique.

For each position, record the job title, employer, location and date. For the most recent one, list 5 to 10 bullet points that show your effectiveness on the job. The savings, improvements, automations you made, the mistakes you avoided. Numbers. This job is about numbers.

For older positions, limit yourself to 3 bullet points.

See if you wouldn’t want this accounting assistant to take care of your invoices:

4. Balance Your Education Section

Generally, a couple years of real on-the-job experience will trump anything you learn in school. In that case, your education section should be more of an honourable mention than an elaborate record. Just list the Degree Name, School, and Graduation Date.

This how you mention education on your CV:

Good Example

Education

Associate of Science – Accounting, 2015-2017

University of California, Los Angeles, United States

If you are very green around the ears, you may want to add achievements or a relevant coursework section below your degree. List the GPA if you graduated in the last 2 years.

Expert Hint: A good LinkedIn profile can go a very long way. If someone goes to that extent to find out more about you, make sure you reward them with something interesting, so they reward you with that job. Check out our LinkedIn career advice.

5. Add Extra Sections To Your Accounting Assistant CV

Even miscellaneous expenses have to be split thematically for ease of browsing. The same is true with your extra sections. There is nothing worse than lumping everything together, your Quickbooks certs and cycling trophies.

Structure logical bonus CV sections:

Above all, keep it relevant! Your CV is about making you the picture of the best candidate possible, not the full picture of who you are as a person.
