Web Developer Skills

Soft Skills: Leadership, Collaboration, Problem Solving, Communication

Hard Skills: Photoshop, Illustrator, Wireframes, CSS3, XHTML, Javascript

Now, here’s how to write a web developer CV:

1. Use the Right Web Developer CV Format

Start right.

The right web developer CV format proves you know a plugin from a pseudoclass.

  • Choose the reverse-chronological CV format. It puts your flashiest achievements above the fold.
  • Use the best CV fonts, 10–14pt, 1-inch margins, white space, and big headings.
  • Always include a prominent portfolio link in your website developer CV. The manager won’t waste time asking you to email it.
  • Write a one page CV unless you’ve worked on 700 of the coolest web dev projects since bootstrap.
  • Start with a CV header. Name, phone number, email address, plus social media links if you like. No snail mail and no photo.
  • After the header, add a web developer CV personal statement, then work experience, then education.
  • Add CV extras like skills, projects, publications, and additional activities to make employers chew their lips a little.

Expert Hint: Use a web developer CV PDF unless the job description bans them. PDF CVs don’t degrade in transit. They’re also machine-readable in 2018.

2. Start With an Automagic Web Developer CV Summary

How to start?

Kick off with a CV summary (or CV objective or CV profile).

It should tell the hiring manager you dream in JavaScript.

Add:

1. An adjective (efficient, creative, prolific)

2. Job title (Web Developer)

3. Years of experience (2+, 5+)

4. How you’ll help (provide out-of-the-box solutions)

5. Flashiest achievements (received a Shorty award)

These two web developer CV examples give a walkthrough:

Web Developer CV—Objective

Good Example
Prolific full-stack web developer with 6+ years of experience and proven end-to-end development skills. Received a Webby in 2016 and raised user experience scores by 35% at Flexztat Ltd. At Coreapex Dev, boosted customer satisfaction by 33%. Commended 5x by manager for efficiency.
Bad Example
Experienced web developer with top-notch skills in web development, wire-framing, Photoshop, and HTML. Have worked as a key player in two different web development firms, handling all web development duties and responsibilities therein.

Sparkly. That first web developer CV sample is valid X 1 million. The measurable achievements will make employers scramble for your contact info.

What if You’ve Got No Experience?

You have accomplishments. Embed those in your junior web developer CV objective.

Graduate Web Developer CV—Objective

Good Example
Lifesaving web developer with expert Photoshop, HTML, and CSS3 skills. Seeking to make life easier for Andrew P. at ELEKS. Recipient of ADAA student web developer award 2017. Developed several professional websites, including a site for an animal shelter that raised £15,000+ in 2 months and saved the lives of 135 animals.

See? No official web dev jobs, but a great junior web developer CV summary.

A web developer CV objective used to share your needs. Don’t do that in 2024. Show how you’ll help instead, by stuffing either with accomplishments and focusing on company goals.

Expert Hint: Write your web development CV summary or CV objective last. That way you’ll have tonnes of content to select from.

3. Write a Viral Web Developer CV Job Description

Powerful advice:

Most won’t write a good CV job description.

Do it, and you’ll stand out like Brad Frost or Kelly Sommers.

Here’s how:

1. Read the job ad.

2. Highlight the web developer CV skills and duties.

3. In your CV bullets, show you invented those things.

These web developer CV examples give the syntax:

Web Developer Job Description—Example

Good Example

Job ad wants these skills: (1) leadership (2) prototyping (3) efficiency.

Web Developer, Supervisor
Flexztat Ltd.
July 2014– September 2018

  • Spearheaded end-to-end web development and cloud engineering. Directed two teams of four employees each.
  • Prototyped average of 30 new product features a year.
  • Mentored 18 employees in best practise adoption through meetings and coaching. Slashed costs 12% and rework 18%.

Key achievement

  • Raised UX scores by 35% over company's previous best.
Bad Example

Web Developer, Supervisor
Flexztat Ltd.
2014–2018

  • Responsible for web development and supervising other web developers.
  • Prototyped client product features.
  • In charge of quality control for UX scores.
  • Followed all web development best practices.

What makes #1 a winning CTA? It’s those glowing measurable accomplishments that fit the job ad.

Web Developer CV Sample—No Experience

Even with no experience for your CV, you can still nail it. Show achievements, like this web developer CV example:

Freelance Web Developer
September 2009–January 2012

  • Built ecommerce webapp to sell hats and t-shirts.
  • Built website with donations functionality for an animal shelter.
  • Developed website for Indie Documentary Paragliding the Alps.
  • Developed web form for a small doctor's office.

Skills on Web Developer CV

Rookie move:

Don’t copy-paste CV skills for web developers from an online list.

That offends like animated GIFs.

But—

For reference, here’s the most important:

Web Developer CV Skills
Soft SkillsHard SkillsProgramming Languages
LeadershipPhotoshopJavascript
CollaborationIllustratorXHTML
CreativityVector GraphicsCSS, CSS3
Problem SolvingWireframesJQuery
AdaptabilityDNS ManagementPHP
Work EthicFront End FrameworksMySQL
CommunicationWordPressRuby
Critical ThinkingAlgorithmsPython
Visual ThinkingGitC++
EnthusiasmDebuggingJava

Expert Hint: Do you have mobile dev skills? Even in 2018, only 20% of developers do mobile. Yet more than half of users hit the mobile web. Be unique = be mobile.

4. Turn Boring Education Into a Reason to Hire You

No brainer:

The education section matters on web developer CVs.

But nobody gets it right.

Permalink your CV to the job offer to make the hiring manager notice.

These web developer CV examples show how:

Education on Front End Web Developer CV—Example

Good Example

Education

BA Computer Science

University of Greenwich
2008–2011

  • Excelled in UX/UI coursework.
  • Pursued a passion for cloud computing and prototyping.
  • Received a Scholars Program grant to study software architecture.
  • Wrote weekly column on web development for school newspaper.
Bad Example

Education

BA in Computer Science

University of Greenwich
2008–2011

  • Grade 2.1
  • Received degree
  • Excelled in public speaking classes

That first web developer CV sample crushes it. It proves you bleed XHTML.

Expert Hint: Is your programming CV experience too “Hello, world”? Use extra CV education achievements like projects, hobby work, and groups.

5. Level-Up Your Web Developer CV With CV Extras

Want a secret?

Most web developer CVs are carbon copies.

If yours shows personality, you’ll turn heads like Glenn Block.

How?

Add CV extra sections that show your passion for constructing sites.

These two web developer CV examples help:

Do not forget to add a portfolio link to your web development CV. A Stack Overflow link looks great too.

Expert Hint: For the winning touch, add a cover letter to your CV for web developer jobs. You’ll multiply your interview requests like Groupon spam.

Key Points

For a great web developer CV:

  • Use the web developer CV template up top. It’ll rescript your job search to land more interviews.
  • Customise your web development CV like a Blue Fountain original. Every bullet point should fit the job so well it hurts.
  • Don’t be generic. Even education in a CV for web developer jobs should show job-fitting achievements.
  • Don’t forget the portfolio. A web development CV is nice, but a great portfolio will get you hired.
  • Add a web developer cover letter to go with your CV
