Is this your first job, or maybe a career change? See our guides:

Now here’s how to write a tutor CV that aces any exam:

1. Use a Neat Tutor CV Format

You’re meant to be the authority here. Don’t let yourself end up looking silly. Formatting your CV correctly is key.

This is the lowdown:

Tutor CV Format

Alright, up to the board you go.

2. Write a Tutor CV Objective or Summary

“Don’t worry about it, nobody’s gonna read it anyway.”

Is what you may as well say to yourself if you don’t absolutely ace your tutor CV objective or summary. They are different types of CV profiles, and you can think of them as your tutor CV’s headline. It’s meant to pull in.

Here’s how to write a captivating career objective or career summary.

Tutor CV Summary—Example

Good Example
A tutor with 6+ years of experience, and a licenced California secondary school math teacher for 3+ years. Author of several innovative teaching approaches for pre-university youth, tested both in classroom and tutoring settings, increasing standardised scores in the class by 12%, as well as the tutoring pupil’s scores by 29%. Currently teaching over 200 secondary school students, and 18 private clients.
Bad Example
Experienced tutor—reliable, organised, with great attention to detail. Able to communicate the most complex concepts effectively to the most incapable of students. Excel at tutoring Maths, Physics, and Chemistry to ages 12-16.

See how that works?

Summaries are pretty self-explanatory: they’re meant to summarise your best achievements.

What if you haven’t worked as a tutor before, and have no experience?

Opt for a tutor CV objective.

It is a brief, targeted statement that lays out the basics of who you are, and your goals.

Entry-Level Tutor CV Objective

Good Example
Enthusiastic, youthful tutor, skilled in SAT and Secondary School tutoring. Top of the school in Maths, graduated Little Vale High School with a 3.8 GPA, and now set to gain a BS in Maths & Physics from the University of London. Looking to expand my client pool and raise their SAT scores exponentially.
Bad Example
New tutor seeking to take on clients in the London area, no experience but a lot of enthusiasm. I have graduated secondary school top of the year in Maths, and am seeking to tutor high school kids math and the sciences to pay for my ride to study Maths & Physics at the University of London.

These two tutor CVs could have been the same person. Do you see the difference? The active voice, the quantified numbers, the not-incriminating yourself? Take heed.

Expert Hint: Do you live in a remote area? Have you left your flyers on university bulletin boards to no effect? Consider using sites like Tutor.com or even Upwork.com to find remote tutoring work.

3. Boost The Scores Of Your Job Description and Skills Section

Describing your work experience on a CV can be trickier than you think. There is no use telling them what they already know. They know you tutor kids. They know you prepare them for SATs. So what? How have you done?

To write a glowing tutor CV job description:

  1. List the right CV skills. Find them by scouring the job ad. We also have a list below for you to pick from.
  2. Use those skills as your CV keywords.
  3. Provide metrics: “Tutoring 29 children weekly”, “have taught class sizes up to 8”, “increased student SAT scores by 20%”, etc.

The first of these tutor CV samples aces it:

Expert Hint: If you’re really struggling for experience, just do some unpaid training—on your brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and anyone else you can find. It’s all the same on the tutor CV.

4. Wow Them With Your Education Section

Wanting to educate people dictates you must be educated yourself. You no doubt are. However, it can be tricky to display it the right way. Your education section should show clearly what you specialise in, and that you are damn good at it. If you have recently graduated, list your GPA.

If you are scarce on work experience, beef up your tutor CV with a relevant coursework or achievements section.

5. Go The Extra Mile

A good tutor is multidimensional, and ready for any challenge. For this reason, it may be positive to expand a little on yourself—especially if you’re low on the experience side.

Experience counts in an tutor CV. But—

You have to show the hiring team you’re good to work with.

How? By adding a few “other” sections to your tutor CV. Choose from:

Key Points

Here’s how to make sure your tutor CV gets the full marks:

  • Set up your CV format—margins, fonts, 1 page, reverse chronological.
  • Base your CV on ResumeLab’s tutor CV sample.
  • Quantify the impact and achievements, instead of just listing responsibilities.
  • Limit the length of the education section as you become more experienced. Expand other sections if you aren’t experienced.
  • Write a tutor cover letter.
