Example #1: Sales Associate Cover Letter
1560 Modoc Alley
Pocatello, ID 83202
Pocatello, Dec 16, 2019
The Fashion Outlet
1 Main Street
Pocatello, ID 83202
I have been a committed customer at The Fashion Outlet for as long as I have lived in Pocatello, and when I saw the job opening for a Sales Associate position, I immediately saw myself filling those shoes. I love finding big-brand bargains in your store, and it would be exciting and refreshing to make connecting those bargains and your customers my daily duty. I have 2+ years of experience in exceeding sales targets and providing great customer service at Walgreens, and I believe I can make a bigger impact at The Fashion Outlet.
From my many visits to your store, I know that the customer experience is paramount to you. You sell premium brands at low rates, and it is important to make these customers feel equally important as if they were paying regular prices. During my time at Walgreens, I have had two customers submit letters commending my service and the way I go above-and-beyond for the customer. I have always aced my secret shopper encounters, and maintained above 90% in the company’s product knowledge tests. Fashion is my passion, and I will be able to channel so much more of my energy into providing excellent customer experience at The Fashion Outlet.
The Fashion Outlet has always made me feel welcome and appreciated, and I can see that this positive and helpful attitude towards the customers must translate to a good working atmosphere behind the scenes. I am looking forward to making a valuable contribution to the team.
When would be good to have a call or a meeting to discuss how I will exceed the sales targets at The Fashion Outlet?

I am writing to you regarding the Sales Associate opening at Kelly’s. I shop there myself, so I know how important the customer service aspect is to you during times when every store stocks all the same things. I am confident that as an energetic, friendly, communicative person I can add my own touch to providing a great customer experience at Kelly’s.
I read that you need an adaptable, communicative Sales Associate with flawless customer service. I excel at interpersonal contact, having volunteered at school and outside it. At school, I have stewarded the teacher-parent conference the last 3 years, even being commended last year for outstanding helpfulness. Outside of school, I volunteer with PATH—an outreach program feeding the homeless—every Saturday I serve over 400 meals to the neediest in our city. Here, you really have to think about your presence and behaviour to make these unfortunate people feel comfortable, so I am sure I will be able to adapt to any customer service situation at Kelly’s.
I chose to apply to Kelly’s as it is the closest store to my home, and I am keen to take a lot of extra, flexible shifts for extra money—and I will be able to do so given my proximity.
Can we schedule a call or a meeting to talk about the customer service skills and dedication I can bring to Kelly’s?

2. How to Write a Top-Shelf Sales Associate Cover Letter
Here’s how to write a job-winning sales associate cover letter:
1. Format Your Sales Associate Cover Letter Correctly
It doesn’t matter what the product is inside. If the packaging is damaged, dirty, or messy, the customer will just pick up the next item over. Your sales associate cover letter is no different. It doesn’t yet matter what is inside. If the packaging—your cover letter format—isn’t up to scratch, you’re staying on the shelf.
Then you are going back to the warehouse, to the discount bin, or simply—the bin. Let’s not let that happen.
Here are the rules to follow for a premium brand cover letter format:
- Align text to the left without justification.
- Use 1-inch margins on all sides.
- Your cover letter font should be the same as your CV font—use a classic like Calibri, Arial or Garamond.
- Use 1.15 line spacing. Drop a line between each section, and between paragraphs.
- 1-page is always enough for a cover letter.
Once you have the packaging ready, it’s time to think about the product. So, what to include in your cover letter for sales associate jobs?

2. List Your Details in the Header
The header of your sales associate cover letter should match your CV header. As technology moves on, people have started omitting their addresses from cover letters and CVs, but for a physically-bound job like a sales associate, you should still list it.Underneath, list the city and date of the letter, and below that, paste the details of the person that’s hiring.
Check against our template:
Sales Associate Cover Letter Header
[ Your Full Name]
[ Your Job Title ] (Optional)
[ Phone Number ]
[ Email Address ]
[ LinkedIn Profile ]
[ City and Date ]
[ Hiring Manager’s Full Name ]
[ Hiring Manager’s Position, e.g. Team Leader ]
[ Company Name ]
[ Company Street Address ]
[ City and Zip Code ]
Expert Hint: Most big chains run their recruitment online. There are some specific issues to keep in mind when sending your sales associate cover letter electronically, which our email cover letter guide will clue you up on.
3. Say Which Job You’re Applying For and Introduce Yourself
There is always going to be a stack of sales associate cover letters and CVs on the manager’s desk in every store. It comes with the territory—it’s an entry-level job. That’s not bad news. A large volume of those will be thoroughly unimpressive. A lot will be just average. You will stand out.
When addressing you sales associate cover letter, always address the manager by their first name. It shows you have attention to detail. If the name of the manager is nowhere to be found in the job posting, pick up the phone! Start your cover letter by telling them which job you’re applying for, and straight away provide a strong argument in your favour to keep them reading.
Check against our sales associate cover letter sample, or just fill in the [blanks] with information relevant to your cover letter.
Sales Associate Cover Letter Example: Introduction
Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name]:
When I found out you are seeking to employ another [Position Name] at [Target Company Name], I was overjoyed. As a [Sales Associate/Previous Position Title] with [number of years]+ years of experience, and with significant [customer service/upselling/rapport building/conflict resolution/collaboration and teamwork/problem solving/time management/other relevant skills you have] skills, I’m confident I can contribute to the world-class customer service at [Target Company Name].
4. Demonstrate You’re The Best Candidate
The second paragraph of your sales associate cover letter should clearly lay out why you are the most suitable candidate. Notice, I did not say the ‘best candidate’. You don’t have to be. You have to be the most suitable.Go through the job posting and pinpoint the most important characteristics, experiences and skills that they’re searching for.
Think about some evidence you can back up your claims with, preferably with numbers. Achievements, commendations, statistics from previous jobs—they will all help. Most people don’t keep track of these things or do not talk about them, so being able to estimate your impact will set you out from the crowd immediately. Like this:
Sample Cover Letter For Sales Associate: Middle Paragraph
You say that your new [Position Name] must [refer to the requirements of the job]. As a [Previous Position Title] at [Name of Your Most Recent Company], I have acquired sizable experience in [refer to the requirements of the job], resulting in [award/achievement/statistic/commendation/success].I believe I have the experience necessary to help [Target Company Name] achieve [the goals or values important to your new employer].
Expert Hint: Is your sales associate CV up to scratch? The Bureau of Labour Statistics reports that even though there over 4.75 million retail jobs in the US, that figure will decline by at least 100,000 in the next decade. As competition tightens, make sure all your documents are ready to make the sale.
5. Show That You Want To Work There
You have already shown yourself to be a top-shelf item. The third paragraph of your sales associate cover letter should address a little bit about why you want to work exactly there. Find out something key to them—values important to them, or just something you may have spotted while shopping there.
Given how many applications they’re getting, they would rather employ someone who shows a bit of interest in the company.
Follow this template:
Sales Associate Cover Letter Sample: Your Motivation
What I find admirable about [Target Company Name], is just how committed you are to [values/way of working/something you found about the company]. This makes me excited to be applying to work here, as to me it is also really important that [refer to what you just mentioned]. This is why I believe working at [Target Company Name] would be a great success for both me and you.
6. Sell! Include a Call to Action
In this job, you’re going to be selling. Selling is often about acting just at the right moment, when the potential customer is unsure, but is giving you a chance. Don’t be passive. When you’re finishing your cover letter, ask for that interview. Justify it by talking about something important to the company or just your best-selling point.
Here is how we closed a sales associate cover letter example:
