John Carter

Hiring Manager

Laurel Research Institute

34 White Lane

Laurel, DE 19956

Dear John,

I am compelled to submit my resume for the Laboratory Technician position at the Laurel Research Institute. Your institute has the reputation of the best research center in the region, which is why I am excited to offer my candidature. As a certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) with 12+ years of experience in biological and chemical testing, currently participating in two government research processes, I am sure I could help you with your nano polymer research.

In 2008, I earned a degree in medical laboratory technology from Delaware College. Shortly after graduation I started doing my research at Regional Medical Centre in Laurel. Thanks to my thorough work, the efficiency and accuracy of testing samples increased by 15%, while I maintained 100% error-free documentation for all my career till now. My knowledge and multitasking skill have improved the work of the laboratory—thanks to this, the waiting time for results has decreased by 18 percent on average since I was employed. Impressed by my skills, my supervisor selected me as a trainer for new employees. Throughout the years of my work I trained 20+ laboratory technicians, of which five work on government projects. My job is not only collecting, preparing and testing samples. I also have maintained 100% documentation accuracy.

The profile of research you are conducting at Laurel is something especially important to me because of its implications in cancer treatments, and I have lost my husband to cancer last year. I believe that my 12+ years of experience in chemical testing and my personal drive will allow me to push your research forward unlike anyone else.

Can we schedule a meeting to discuss the government projects I have been involved in?

Sincerely,

Barbara W. Burke

Barbara is not going to be waiting very long for those results. However, what if you are applying for such a position right out of school?

Ashley Black

Hiring Manager

YourLab

2 Sunny Avenue

Jacksonville, FL 32099

Dear Ashley,

The emphasis YourLab puts on modern research techniques and continuous staff training is the main reason why I would like to submit my resume for the open position of Laboratory Technician in your branch in Jacksonville.

I have completed my studies in medical laboratory science from University of Florida, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. I got an exceptional 100% result of my final exams, and I am now a Certified Laboratory Technician. I was in the group of 5% of the best students during the entire period of study. University of Florida during student training uses only the latest laboratory equipment, so I am familiar with their use. I also know methods of conducting laboratory documentation, I have been commended on this by my professors 3 times. I can analyze data efficiently, and the knowledge I have gained so far minimizes the risk of error. Multitasking and stress resistance are my second and third name.

Laboratories of YourLab are one of the most modern ones in our area. They provide employees with continuous training and that is my motivation to become a part of your team. I have the knowledge and the right skills to be able to learn from you. Gaining experience from the best laboratory technicians and working with them would be for me a great opportunity.

When would be a good time to schedule a call or a meeting to discuss how I managed 100% in my final exams?

Sincerely,

Deborah J. Harrington

How to Write a Lab Technician Cover Letter

1. Use the Business Cover Letter Format

Apart from running around with vials and looking good in your lab coat, you’re going to be working with documents all day long, and expected to exercise due care and diligence. Your lab technician cover letter is a document. Treat it as such. Be concise, precise, and organized.

So follow the rules of the business cover letter format:

  • Use your resume font
  • 1-inch margins, 1.15 spacing.
  • Left-align your cover letter, and single-space your text.
  • Include three paragraphs in your lab technician cover letter.
  • How long can your cover letter be? Keep it to less than 1 page.

Next, let’s collect the samples to include in your cover letter.

2. List Your Contact Information In the Header

An unlabeled lab tech cover letter has the same chances of getting results as an unlabeled vial. Use the same header as your resume header. List your contact info, the city and date of the letter on a separate line, and the details of the hiring manager.

Have all these:

3. Identify Yourself And State the Position You’re Applying For

Starting your cover letter, right away hit them with the basic details: what you’re applying for and why. Address your cover letter by first name. Base it on this:

Lab Technician Cover Letter: Introduction

Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],

I am elated to have the opportunity to become a lab technician at [Target Organization Name]. I have [number of years]+ years as a [Previous Position Title] under my belt, and have acquired the necessary [skill] skills to handle the volume and type of [type of work / research] work you deal with at [Target Position Name].

Expert Hint: If you’re scarce for relevant experience, or this is your first job, feel free to list some other achievements from your resume, such as your high school GPA, or private, computer or data related interests on your lab technician cover letter.

4. Give Them A Reason To Hire You

Now that you have their attention, it’s time to fire up the induction coils. Check the job ad with a microscope and see exactly what type of work they do, and what your responsibilities will be. In the second paragraph of your laboratory technician cover letter, list your experience that corresponds to this.

Back up your arguments with metrics, volume and type of work handled, error-free rates, results of research you participated in, anything that will make you stand out from the rest of the Petri dish.

Like this:

Laboratory Technician Cover Letter Sample: Second Paragraph

You require a lab technician skilled in [refer to the requirements of the job]. At [Name of Your Previous Employer], I spent [number of years]+ [refer to the requirements of the job], processing approximately [X] samples for the company in this time with a [X]% accuracy. I have experience performing [types of work/analysis] using the [type of equipment]. I routinely perform [X] [type of procedure] a day. I type at [X]wpm, with an accuracy of [X]%.

Expert Hint: The job isn’t all vials and pipettes. There’s going to be a lot of typing. If you’re scarce on experience, listing your typing speed could help. Don’t know what your typing speed is? In approximately 60 seconds, you will! Take an online test to find the average. If you don’t have experience to put on your lab technician cover letter, you can even take the accuracy rate from this test and put it next to your wpm here, and in the skills for a resume for a lab technician.

5. Explain Why You Applied

Now that you have explained your reasons for being the best candidate, it’s time to explain why they are the best place for you to join, and what exactly you can do for them.

Fill in the [blanks]:

Lab Technician Cover Letter Sample: Third Paragraph

I believe I have the prerequisite skills to make a reliable professional and contribute to the flawless accuracy and lightning speed at [Target Organization Name].
